The Rock Restaurant.

If you are a foodie like me, and you find yourself near the East coast of Africa, you might want to pay a visit to Zanzibar....🍴🍻.

Literally built on an outcrop of rock in the middle of the Indian ocean, the famous Rock Restaurant on Zanzibar island off the coast of Tanzania is one of the most sought-after destinations of culinary delight in the world. Near the island of Unguja, Tanzania, it is a small white building made of clay, stone, straw and wood, which is conveniently nestled in a small coastal cliff. A modest little house surrounded by sparse vegetation, which gives a bit of shade and adds a restaurant to its natural charms. Eating at this picturesque location is an experience you can’t miss...colors, relish, ambience and sensations blend together in unique magical potpourri of elegance and traditional serenity that takes your breath away.

It takes just one look to immediately understand that no pencil nor brush could draw such beauty....only Mother Nature could have dreamt of such heights. The Rock Restaurant rises on a rock not distant from the shore of the beautiful Michanwi Pingwe beach on Zanzibar island off Africa´s east coast. Easily accesible by a smooth-flowing route, the Rock is located south east of the island, on the Michamwi Pingwe peninsula, it is a 10 minutes car drive from Page, an hour from Stone Town and an hour and a half from the north tip of the island.

An extraordinary seafood restaurant, depending on the tide, you can go walking, swimming or even by boat as the restaurant sits on top of a sea-rock which is actually an itsy-bitsy tidal island (It becomes an Island only during High tide). During low tide you can just walk to the Rock as seen in the photos below. The tide levels will determine whether you roll up the jeans or swim or boat your way over. Once you get there, prepare to be satisfied with dishes like octopus salad, jumbo prawns in curry sauce, or The Rock Special (grilled lobster, cigal, jumbo prawn, fish fillet and calamari). Of courser the seafood is always fresh and if you plan to stop there, book early, because the restaurant only has 14 tables.

This romantic location and the panoramic ocean view with a fine menu of fresh seafood makes this restaurant a must on any bucket list. The restaurant is by far not the cheapest but the experience makes it worth the while.

Tip #1: Dine in restaurant when tide is high – the panoramic ocean view is definitely something special – or even better (but a tad harder to synchronize) go at the very end of low tide so you can watch the seascape changing as tide comes in and engulfs the Rock.
